What no bacon?!! At an Eastbourne B&B??
I nearly choked on my cappuccino this morning reading the headlines on the BBC News website.
According to the National Pig Association, we could soon be facing a global shortage of pork… But what about our Eastbourne B&B guests who want to tuck into our tasty rashers of bacon and succulent sausages?
Eyes widening in horror, I read on to find that apparently a drought in the US, the world’s largest producer of maize, has caused a global shortage in pig feed.
I quickly speed dialled our local produce supplier to make sure our top quality, extra-thick bacon would still be delivered.
Thankfully, because our bacon all comes from Sussex-reared pigs, we’re safe – it seems that imported supplies will most be affected. The worst we’ll get is a bit of a price rise and you know what? You’re worth it…
But it has made me think. If meat prices are on the up, maybe Carl’s pipe dream to be like Tom & Barbara of The Good Life, with a small holding in our backyard, isn’t such a crackpot scheme…
